My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of my students face struggles such as poverty or homelessness, and show their resilience every day. My students are gifted singers, instrumentalists, and storytellers. They are eager to interact with their peers in meaningful ways.
I serve two schools. One is an arts-based magnet school that includes a specialized program for students with special needs. All children in this K-8 school learn in and through the arts (dance, music, visual art, theater). Each year, our special education students present a performance that shares their strengths and talents with this school.
The other school I serve is a transition plus program for 18-21 year-old students with special needs. At this school, students with intellectual and physical disabilities learn job, life, leisure, and community skills that will help them live as independently as possible.
