I teach at an urban, arts magnet high school serving a high poverty population. Students audition in 6th grade, and about 20% of the students who audition will gain admission for their 7th grade year.
Once in high school, students spend two periods a day in art class. The arts motivate our students to come to school every day, and as a result, we have the best attendance and graduation rate in the district. (We have a 90% graduation rate compared to a district average of 37%.)
