My students are curious and eager to learn 11 year olds. Although this is so, I have two challenges that face my students. The first is that they attend a school where most of the students fall into the low socio-economic class. Money is tight and school supplies are not on the top of the priority list for some parents. The second challenge correlates with the first. Research indicates that children from low-SES households and communities develop academic skills more slowly compared to children from higher SES groups (Morgan, Farkas, Hillemeier, & Maczuga, 2009). With this being said, my students require more repetition of concepts in order to thoroughly understand what is being taught and asked of them.
