I teach a classroom of twenty-one fifth graders in rural Alabama. The majority of our students come from households that are at or below poverty level. Of the twenty-one students I teach, only seven were able to bring in school supplies for the beginning of the year. This beginning to our school year put many of my students in a situation where they did not have the materials to compete, much less succeed, academically.
