Providing art journals and drawing supplies will allow my students greater freedom to express their thinking and learning in a visual format. My students are thirsty for alternative ways to show what they know, what they've learned, and what questions they have. Too often the language barrier prevents them from fully expressing what they feel, think, and wonder. Through art, my fourth graders can make their learning and thinking visible.
By donating to this project, you will gift my students with the freedom of self-expression that will directly impact their academic growth and personal awareness.
Students will also learn to explore other art mediums that will otherwise be confined to their weekly Art classes. The watercolors will teach them to layer transparent colors to achieve different effects while the oil pastels can give them an experience with using oil colors without the prohibitive cost of oil paints. The colored pencils will allow them to showcase rich, deep luminescent colors they might not otherwise achieve with plain crayons. The mixed media journals will be able to handle all of these art mediums. My goal is that these materials will encourage my students to observe themselves and their surroundings and provide them a place to record their thoughts along with the art they produce. While their writing gives them a voice for their thoughts, their art will help express their more subtle and complex ideas.
