Many of my students only have access to computers at school.
I teach 7th and 8th graders at a public middle school in San Jose, California how to use a computer to facilitate their work. Many of my students are English learners or have special educational needs. Working in the computer lab seems to really motivate them and it allows student who struggle with writing access to technology tools that can facilitate that process for them.
In the lab, students learn how a computer works, how to use Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Internet research skills, basic web page design, and iMovie. Our computers have built in cameras that allow us to take still and video images. I feel very lucky that we have the resources that are available to us and I am happy to help my students build their technology skills. These skills will someday help them compete in the workforce.
