Hands-on activities encourage a love of learning and connect abstract concepts to real world applications. Students are asked to conduct investigations constantly in science classes. This is invaluable to our English Language Learners which is 46% percent of our population.
Due to our high migrant student population English language learners, and student's socioeconomic statuses, our need for great engagement opportunities is enormous. Only 36% of our 7th grade students are meeting standard in ELA and only 28.5% in mathematics. While 58% are passing our science standards in 8th grade, we want that number even higher. With the advantages of hands on learning we can foster a generation of language learners who excel in science and bring new perspective to an underprivileged population.
