This year I will be teaching science to all of the 5th graders at my school. In the past, I have noticed more and more of my students coming in with little experience with unstructured creating time. My hope is to create a small maker space/ tinker lab in my classroom and give students the opportunity to create, tinker, and make using materials they may not have access to at home. My goal is to have students use our class sessions on Fridays as a tinkering, making, creating time.
Maker spaces provide students with the opportunity to practice important 21st century skills like creative thinking, problem solving and working with others in a low stakes, low risk environment that emphasizes fun and the process over a specific solution.
The Stem Bins Kit provides materials and challenges for students, using more familiar items, and it will supplement items I already have. As students gain comfort with tinkering, they will branch out to using the motors and batteries to create small toys or other items while also learning about circuits and electronics.
