My students are middle school grades and I have a mix of special ed and general ed students. All of my students are at least two grades deficient in their reading level and I have some who are as many as six years deficient.
Our school has a high level of poverty as measured by the amount that qualify for free and reduced lunches. For these students reading can be their key success. If they can get it now, in middle school, before they go to high school, then they have a fighting chance to have all the doors open for them that they desire.
