I teach 24 amazing kindergarteners in Spanish. About half of my students are learning Spanish for the first time, and for the first part of the year, they do not know what I am saying most of the time! The other half are Spanish models, and they are in the dual immersion program to develop literacy skills and academic vocabulary in their native language.
As my students make friends throughout the year, they support each other in learning a second language. They are a talkative bunch, but the more they talk, the more words they soak up!
Our school is unique because it is encouraging deeper learning through in-depth investigations. We as teachers are encouraged to dive into a subject area that interests the students and develop projects that reflect their diverse thinking.
