Our school supports a population with 76% of students classified as living in high poverty. We are a focus school, which indicates we are lower performing in reading and math. We are performing below the 15th percentile out of all elementary schools in Oregon. We are a Title 1 school that also supports a large ELL population. School is the only place where many of my students have access to books through our school or classroom libraries. With such a high % of students struggling to read it is hard to motivate students to read if they are not engaged in the subject matter and do not have access to books at their reading level.
My students are in great need of more books in our classroom. We specifically need a variety of science resource books to pair with our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) units that are being written and piloted by our 1st & 2nd grade team this year. We are studying: Forces That Shape the Earth, Sates & Properties of Matter, and Environments.
