This summer I spent a lot of time thinking and praying about my students and praying that I could be a good teacher to them. When I looked at the names on my roster I never could imagine what I would discover about my students. I knew that I would be teaching at a school in which over 90 percent of the students receive free and reduced lunch. I knew that I would be teaching at a school in which most of the students come from disadvantage homes. But I did not know that I would be teaching students that have seen war and have been separated from their families. The words I hear through broken English describe death and violence are hard for my mind to process because these words are sprouting from the mouths of my 8 year old students. They have experienced seeing family members killed and taken away and they have be labeled a refugee. Even though these children have been exposed to harsher sides of life I look into their eyes and see hope. Hope that burns so bright that it's blinding.
