I teach in an urban district in a school where over 75% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch programs. These students enter school with the statistics stacked against them. Even so, they come to school energized and curious about the world. They are determined to make it to college and to graduate. They, and their families, believe in the transformative power of an excellent education. They all love reading, but know that they must practice in order to gain the skills they will need to be literate adults.
