Scholars at our middle school are studying themes of empathy through memoirs from the Holocaust and Pearl Harbor, biographies, such as Frederick Douglas, Diary of Anne Frank, and other texts focusing on perseverance, respect, and responsibility.
Our students are developing a love of reading, but do not have the resources to develop their reading interests outside of school. Being able to provide new novels to our students will improve their reading level and prepare them for high school, college, and their future careers.
When discussing this project with my students, they are excited about the prospect of something new that they can "dig their teeth into" and gain a better understanding of the concepts and make clear, relevant connections.
