We are at a high-poverty elementary school, with 91% of students on the free- and reduced-lunch program. Of the 500 students, about 80% are Hispanic. Most are English-Language Learners, being either first- or second-generation students from Mexico. Additionally, half of our students are new to the school this year, making it difficult to reach and teach so many students. Furthermore, my students cannot afford such luxuries as purchasing books. Their families do not have the resources, and it is difficult for me, the classroom teacher, to fund a classroom library that students will fully want to be part of.
