I teach in a year round school in an urban setting. For my students, school is a safe haven. Many don't have access to food, let alone books.
My reading intervention students currently use intervention workbooks during small group times. With chapter books, they can read novels like their higher performing classmates. Also, I am choosing books that will interest my students, so that they will be more engaged and will hopefully be more interested in reading. Maybe they will even enjoy it in the future!
These books will be read and discussed as a group, with fun and interesting culminating activities being completed when we are finished reading the book. I plan on reusing these books each year with different grade levels of students.
