This project will provide three sets (to be shared by English teachers/classes) of The 57 Bus: A True Story, by news journalist Dashka Slater. The novel profiles two teenagers and their backgrounds, and the circumstances that led to a shocking crime on a bus, number 57, in Oakland.
This novel will challenge readers as it showcases the divide of class, race and gender in an engaging story that riveted the Bay Area and the nation. Students will have the opportunity to engage in thought, discussion and writing as they explore in-depth interviews with both teens and others in their circles, and the social context of a community.
