I teach in an urban public school where 80 percent of the students are on free and reduced lunch, and they often come from homes that don't have ANY books. Students test into my Reading class if they are found to be reading below grade level, and I have plenty of middle school students who are reading at a third grade level and hate picking up a book. I want to get my kids excited to pick up a book that is interesting but will also challenge them and grow their vocabulary.
