Each day I meet with several groups of students to work in guided reading groups. We have a small table that makes it difficult for more than a couple students to fit comfortably, and have room to work with different literacy materials. Often times, I have manipulatives, charts, a small pocket chart and books that seem to become in the way when reading with my students. They often become a distraction, rather than tools I intend to use during our lesson.
If were able to get a horseshoe reading table, it would give me more access to each student in the group, and give each of my students a more individualized experience during our small group time. During these groups, I listen to my students read quietly, and being so close together is often distracting. Instead of reading independently, the students are copying the person next the them. Having more space will allow me to listen to each student individually and allow me to teach each student what he/she needs to do to become a better reader.
Having limited room in my classroom, the horseshoe table will fit easily, and make our time together so much more efficient.
