I work in a New York City public school. My students are a diverse group of children. They are of different cultures and ethnicities
The students in my school live in a neighborhood of hardworking families who still struggle at the poverty level. My students include English language learners and children with special needs.
English is not their first language. They do not have the opportunity to speak English at home, as their families communicate in languages other than English. Some children do not see their families until the evening.
At the young age of five, they are ready to take in every bit of knowledge I can share with them. This is the very beginning of their school career. This precious time will shape their perception of what school means to them. I want them to eagerly come to school each morning with smiles on their faces and confidence in what they can accomplish.
