My students are from urban, high-poverty areas of Minneapolis. They bring with them some challenges and also plenty opportunity for growth and success. My students love to work in groups, and they love big projects. They are insightful, reflective, and risk takers.
In my Geography classes, students learn about map skills, population and migration, urban development and rural agriculture, and so much more. My students also learn about sustainability and resources. They are environmentally-minded. This year, my students were able to extend one of their research projects further by working to make a change on a topic of their choosing. They could write a letter to someone in government, volunteer, raise money, or raise awareness about their topics. They really enjoyed taking action on something they cared about.
