Every semester when my class curriculum focuses on sex education, specifically contraceptives, my students are amazed at how many different types there are. Most have only heard about condoms and birth control pills. They have displayed an eagerness, desire to learn and ask countless questions.
They often share what they have learned in class that day with their mom, dad, auntie, and others who will listen. To increase the retention and impact, I would like to:
1) Purchase a contraceptive display board showing each method in physical form, with an explanation, effectiveness percentage, and where to purchase. This will be more effective than simply showing pictures as typically done in the past. The display board will be visible year round, which keeps this topic at the forefront even when it’s not being taught in the classroom.
2) Purchase a DVD that addresses STDs, teen pregnancy, and teen parenting. The message is delivered through real-life stories shared by other students their own age. Teens will often shrug off their parents, family members, or teachers who try to share the same information. Hearing about the struggle from other teens should have a deeper impact.
3) Purchase a Wheel of STD Misfortune. This is a simple, fun game that shows the students how easy it is for an STD to be contracted.
By donating to our project, you will not only further our students' education, but you will impact their futures and contribute to stopping the teen parenting cycle. Will you support us?
