I am a teacher for the public schools and I teach at a private residential facility for behavioral, emotional and mental disabilities.
The patients live at the facility for 6-12 months while undergoing therapy for various diagnoses. I teach on the Autism/Neuro Unit and my students are in 5th-12th grades. Patients come from all over the state.
One of the biggest challenges I face as an Autism teacher is Sensory Integration issues. This is a very common condition in autistic children; it can manifest itself in excessively high or low activity levels, problems with motor coordination, or over sensitivity or under sensitivity to sensations and movements.
Some of my students on the spectrum are non-verbal which makes it even harder to voice their needs and wants. This distress can lead to unwanted and unneeded behaviors.
Funding is a bit difficult for us at this site and almost everything I have for the students, I have bought myself.
