Many experts recommend that a typical classroom should have at least 600 books for students to choose from. This number is based solely on class size and does not account for the different needs of the individual students. Ideally, a well-stocked, diverse library contains upward of 1,200 books. Unfortunately, the cost of a solid classroom library falls mostly into the lap of the teacher and, while I utilize many discount resources, it is a struggle to provide multiple copies of the titles my students beg for.
It is my passion and my goal to ignite the love of reading inside each of my students by providing them texts that pique their interests and stimulate their imaginations. Too often, students feel beaten down by the process of reading and test preparation. Year after year, I find fewer students who love to read for pleasure. I want to change this. In order to do so, I must meet the needs and interests of my students by providing them with an amazing, robust classroom library.
I believe in choices. I believe that children have the right to choose what they read. I believe that the love of reading does not have to be diminished or completely lost due to standardized testing. Though it may be a challenge financially, I believe a classroom library is an investment in our future and the books I have chosen for this project have been personally requested by my 5th-grade students. In addition, my kiddos love to move! While some are perfectly content lying on the rug, reading away, some of my students need an outlet for their energy beyond our limited recess. I have found that providing students with a wobble chair or stability ball greatly increases the length of time they participate in recreational reading.
