I am proud to teach, work alongside, and learn from young warrior scholars who believe that they can change the world. These 10th graders embody courage, passion, imagination, and resilience, and they continually renew my faith in humanity.
Many of them have been labeled "at-risk" and "troubled," problematic terms that are rooted in deficit thinking.
Some of them have been pushed out of school. Some have been locked up. Others have experienced extreme trauma. Yet all of them bloom when given opportunities to be heard and to be seen for all of who they are.
By leaning into vulnerability and co-holding empathic space for one another--through the stories they read, write, and share--my students deepen understanding of themselves and each other. And it is this fuller awareness of one another that leads to more open hearts and minds.
