Although our school is very diverse, we often see kids lacking tolerance and compassion for people who are not like them. It is my goal as a teacher to produce compassionate, tolerant students who also can think critically and comprehend what they are reading. The book "Wonder" is about a boy was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face and he has the task of teaching his peers that he is really just like them.
The requested books will teach my students that all people are really very similar despite their differences.
My students will be engaged as this book has recently been made into a movie. We will read the thrilling novel and then compare and contrast the movie with the book. Your donation ensures that several school years worth of fourth graders will build their compassion and their comprehension skills!
