My students live in a large urban environment with struggles such as gangs, lack of materials, and lack of parental involvement exist everyday. Many of them are English learners and simply making it through the day at the school is a challenge. I have the joy of teaching them dance. It is subject where many of them have very little prior knowledge and regardless of their language, math, or reading skills they can be successful in my class. The opportunity to create movement, ideas, or dance that express their emotions and feelings around their daily struggles is extremely valuable and appreciated by the students. In a time where many academically challenged students are being forced to take a math or English elective, my school still provides the arts as a vessel to provide creativity and inspire the students to be in charge of their learning.
