My second graders are a very diverse group. From military students who have seen the world, to some who haven't crossed over the nearby river, and everyone in between, our students are thirsty for knowledge, attention, and a chance to show the world what they're capable of. With well over half of my students on free and reduced lunch, it goes without saying that some have never used technology until they step foot in our school. While we have and utilize technology in our school, our classroom, originally built to house middle school students, only has space for one desktop computer. I also allow my students to use the teacher issued laptop to increase their use of technology. Many of our students have accounts for awesome remediation programs online with little to no access to them other than the little time they have here at school. An iPad mini will not only fit comfortably inside our classroom, but it will fit comfortably in the hands of my seven and eight year old learners.
