Donations to this project will help my students feel not only welcome in my classroom, but also valued. By having lots of books that represent the diverse races, religions, and cultures in my classroom, my students will be more invested in learning. These books will not only help establish a culture of belonging and acceptance, but also one of reading and inquiry. According to Elizabeth Kozleski, 鈥淭o be effective in a diverse classroom, teachers must have an appreciation of diversity. They must view difference as the 鈥渘orm鈥 in society and reject notions that any one group is more competent than another. This entails developing respect for differences, and the willingness to teach from this perspective. Moreover, there must be an acknowledgment that the teachers鈥 views of the world are not the only views.鈥 These books will be one step in achieving this appreciation of diversity and will help foster a lifelong love of reading and classroom full of happy and engaged students.
