My students are ambitious and driven. In our AP Environmental Science class, I recognize that students are preparing for an exam to earn college credit. However, I strive to teach more than what can be offered in books. Regardless of how they score on exam day in May, I know that my students exit my course with a greater understanding of the issues facing our world.
Although my students have literally grown up with the world at their fingertips, through the speed with which information now travels, I am always amazed at their limited experience in the diverse habitats surrounding the community they have grown up in. Some have never seen a mangrove tree or visited Everglades National Park. It is my goal to take students away from the classroom and into these natural environments for observation and field work.
We are fortunate to have access to field trips, but I would love to enhance their experience by adding the ability to photograph and identify the organisms they encounter.
