My project is all about creating a calm and peaceful alternative to your typical outdoor-playground recess. As a school counselor, I have come across many children who find recess stressful for one reason or another. Perhaps they have sensory issues, social anxiety, or trouble making or keeping friends. Maybe they have an injury, such as a broken ankle and can't run and play for a few weeks. Whatever the reason, they dread going to recess because they often feel left out, lonely, or misunderstood by others.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a safe and peaceful place that supported the social and emotional growth of these sensitive children?
A place where they could play board games, build with Lego, read books, tend to a garden or just check-in with a caring adult. A place where kids can take a break from tag, soccer and other competitive games. A place with fewer students, and a lower level of stimulation, so that easily overwhelmed kids can recharge, and come back to class with a calm body and brain.
This peaceful patio needs 2 sturdy, weather-proof picnic tables for the kids to gather around and play games. It also needs a storage cart to hold Lego, games, books and gardening equipment, and a cover to protect it from the elements. I'm so excited to launch this project and make a difference for kids who struggle to be successful at recess. Thank-you for considering my request.
