After 29 years of teaching middle school, and raising four kids of my own, I can say that being comfortable and having choices are a huge plus in middle school. My students are a 100% digital ELA classroom; we move in and out of various seating arrangements daily depending on the lesson. Many days, I work with a small group, have small groups collaborating together, and have a station of independent workers. Over a week's time, we rotate so that everyone gets a day in each setting. I love the way I get to work closely with a small group, but also give them an opportunity to work with peers and individually. Last year, students helped me pick out seating options for this project: yoga ball seats, bar stools, wobbly stools, and even bean bag chairs. They loved the idea of being able to sit and work in a variety of seats...each creating a different vibe and atmosphere. I can't wait to see what happens!
