They show up every day ready to learn. They come from many different backgrounds and experiences.
They are up against a lot. They go to school in a district with less than a 50% high school graduation rate. They keep trying anyway. They want to go to college, no matter how hard it will be to get there.
They are up against so much, but they don't let it stop them. They are all "good" kids. They all want to learn.
If you ever thought you wanted something badly, come to my school at 10 AM on a Friday when my middle schoolers are struggling through a test, faces scrunched up in concentration. Or come to my school on report card day. You'll see kids that want academic achievement more than you've ever wanted something in your life.
