E Elementary is located in the heart of Salt Lake City. My students come from many different backgrounds. E Elementary has 39 different countries represented and 20 different languages. Many of my students struggle to have their basic needs met on a daily basis. Their time at school is spent experiencing many things they would never have the opportunity to experience. My class is an inquiry based classroom where we learn by doing and questioning.
First graders are complex thinkers when given the opportunity to take their natural curiosity and expand it to include questioning, testing, data collection, and explaining their thinking. Students have a variety of experiences in which they design, build, and test their own experiments. First grade students learn how to think deeply and to explore many strategies and options to solving different problems in all curriculum areas.
