Middle school students often find it hard to describe or discuss who they really are. This concept is something that many student's struggle with because they are at an age where they become at odds with who they are and how they fit into the world. They are learning to be independent and "grown up" while still being a kid. Too often, our students forget who they see themselves as, and get caught up in the way others see them.
In this project, students will be tasked with examining the concept of who they see themselves to really be. Students will use the print making supplies to create an artistic and expressive monoprint for the background of their self portrait. They will then choose either an actual image of themselves or a collage of other images in order to create a self representation. These photos will be transferred to their monoprint using the gel medium. Students will then use other media to enhance their expressive self representation.
After students complete their self representation, they will be asked to write an artist statement about their work of art. In their written statement, students will discuss the various expressive meanings within their work and how their work is a representation of how they see themselves.
