For too long, children with special needs have lacked access to most technology, due to high cost or a lack of disability–friendly features. But with tablets bridging the gap, special needs children can now reap the benefits of affordable, educational apps, alongside their peers.
For children who lack motor skills, manipulating between a keyboard, mouse, and screen can be very difficult and overwhelming. But the touchscreen of a tablet makes it easier for special needs kids to not only use, but master the process. And while desktop computers pose a number of challenges for people with limited mobility, the tablet's function is not compromised. Let's not forget a tablet holds a high degree of social acceptability that appeals to all students. With the tablets, individuals with special needs are using the same technology as their peers.
If we are granted these tablets, my students will be able to access apps that reinforce skills and enable higher level learning. A tablet helps students who are kinesthetic and visual learners open up the doors of education and individualize their learning experiences. The tablet will become a tool that will help create more authentic learning experiences in the classroom as well as build 21st century skills that our children need in order to be successful in a quickly evolving technical world.
Without consistent access to technology, my students are not able to develop 21st century skills. I believe that they should not be held back because of lack of funds, but deserve to explore and learn on the same level as students who have this access. Our classroom will be forever changed by the addition of tablets. All my students will be able to access learning through technology on a daily basis!
