VPK is a magical place. Teaching Pre-K in a Title 1 school is still magical, but comes with challenges. Many families struggle to send in school supplies, and all students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. My 4 and 5 year old students are clever, energetic, and hard working. Most of them come from low income households with limited exposure to English. They are eager and excited to learn. We spend our 180 days together learning social skills, how to read, write, count, add, and subtract. We celebrate successes, and learn from mistakes. I say "we" because I strive for my students to become a family, and to make the classroom our school home. This is accomplished by providing a safe, and inviting atmosphere for my students to learn in. My student's favorite thing to do every day is reading centers; this is a time for them to work together, interact with books, and practice their reading skills.
