The flexible seating will make a difference in the students ability to focus. Students sit on a bus for 45 min. to school, sit most of the day at school, and then another 45 min. on the bus home. I try to get them moving as much as possible, but most of the day is still sitting.
Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. The more comfortable and engaged a student is the more they can retain. This will also teach the students to share and be flexible because students will have to take turns. The chairs will give the students an option of how they want to sit, 5th graders are at the beginning of the age where they have to start figuring out how they learn best. It's an easy choice I can give them. One more year and they are off to middle school.
With this opportunity students of all backgrounds and needs will have a better opportunity to learn. I have students that have severe ADD and ADHD, this will help them with their sensory needs to refocus. Many of our students are easily distracted with will I eat breakfast, dinner, where will I sleep tonight and many other issues most of us take for granted.
