The resources in this project would be used in Literacy as independent reads, small group resources and mentor texts- some of the fiction stories even have interdisciplinary potential as they relate to Social Studies content. I have read most of the books I added to my project- and some I am dying to read with my students! However, I also included nonfiction books that could hopefully spark the curiosity of those students who have a difficult time maintaining their interest in fictional stories.
Representation in media matters- especially when you teach a diverse group of students. To that point, I chose fictional books that represent a diversity of characters. "Ghost" and "The War that Save My Life" tell the stories of two very distinct characters whose stories have a similar theme- that of survival against many odds. Nonfiction books about high-interest topics such as animals and space would also be a welcome addition to my library. I am excited to share these stories- and experience new ones- with my class, thanks to you!
