The students in my classes represent a wide range of socio-economic, racial, cultural, and experiential backgrounds. The students in art and design classes come to me with different ideas about school; many of them struggle with learning differences which make it difficult to attend class, some of them are high achieving, some are just trying to float through. Our school is very focused on the college track, which is wonderful for some but feels exclusive for some students who fight for every little academic victory. My classes typically represent students who feel marginalized by the high-achieving track.
