Generally, the only way English Learners can learn in their classes is with the use of a dictionary, pictures/drawings, gestures, and the teacher's ability to differentiate and scaffold lessons for them. They always need a Word To Word Bilingual Dictionary wherever they go within the school campus where learning takes place. They need and use them during class lectures, class/group/pair/individual activities. They always need a pencil (that requires a heavy-duty sharpener) and colored markers to inspire and support them to bring the best out of them despite their limited English.
Bilingual dictionaries help my students increase their English words, help them understand their lessons, and help them pass standardized tests. Colored markers, as well as pencils and sharpeners, will allow them to create graphics for the different concepts to express their ideas and visualize what they learned in class.
