Our students are smart and really do enjoy developing the skill of reading. Our student population is small in comparison with a 289 count; and is rather diverse, consisting of 60% African American, 39% Hispanic, and 1% White. 98% of our students receive free or reduced price meals. Our school community is surrounded by three major thoroughfares, which makes it difficult for our students to walk to school or visit the closest public library that is about one mile away. The closest book seller is a little over four miles away from the school's community. Many of our students depend on us for more than helping them to learn the curriculum. They depend on us for two meals and a snack each day, they depend on the availability of books and technology in our small media center, and they depend on us to expose them to the positive culture in the city. So my colleagues and I work collaboratively to teach the whole child, regardless to how small our budget. We want them to dream big.
