My students are aged five to seven in Kindergarten and First Grade combination class. They are all in my class because they are beginning English Leaners. The first day of school is exciting yet stressful. I see smiling faces, nervous faces, anxious faces and tears running down their faces. I greet then with a big smile and try to say "Hello" in as many languages as I can remember. I hear them speak in languages such as Spanish, Farsi, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Italian and Japanese. In all, there are twelve languages represented in my classroom of 28 students.
Our school is a public school serving over 725 students located in Southern California. We serve students in Transitional Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. We also have Special Education classes at our school. In addition, our elementary school has a very large English Learner population. Our school is older and has transformed over the years with updates such as new carpet, fresh paint, updated bathrooms and a small garden.
