Students learn best when they are actively engaged. When the students get the joy of a new instrument that is easy to play and is relevant to their surroundings, music learning comes alive. Living in a community on the Atlantic ocean, the children are able to be exposed to multiple genres and styles of music. Latin/Caribbean music is heard often in many beachfront areas from Pawleys Island to Myrtle Beach. Therefore, using this style music to engage student learning is a very exciting and appropriate project.
With the Jumbie Jam Steel Drums, the students will get to read, play, and perform music in an engaging experience, all while exposed to the sounds of Latin and Caribbean music. The students will learn to read music, perform music, and improvise with other Latin instruments to create their own sound.
All students, regardless of grade level or ability, will have opportunities to play these instruments in multiple settings. Further, they will be exposed to and get to learn about an instrument that the next school they will attend has in their curriculum.
