Our fifth-grade room bustles with the energy and curiosity of 10- and 11-year olds at work and play. Fifth graders have inspiring insights into people, history, justice, responsibility, and empathy, and every day provides new questions and observations about our world.
My students are so excited to learn more about the world, especially the world beyond the one they experience every day. Though many of them are not well-traveled, they relate to the hopes and struggles of others, whether they are across the globe or across centuries going back in history. They raise important questions about who has freedom, what the responsibilities are for being a citizen of the world, and, as we say every day in our morning motto, how "every day is a new chance to make the world a better place."
