I teach elementary band and orchestra in a county where resources for music are scarce. I keep the instrumental music inventory as up-to-date as possible by replacing wear items such as cases, strings, mouthpieces, bows, stands, and music. No student is ever turned away from band or orchestra participation due to lack of an instrument, so working instruments are vital to keep students making music for many years to come.
