Our Ethnic Studies class has three primary areas of study: history, civics and behavioral sciences. To begin the year, each student will complete a DNA test during the first week of the semester. We will photograph the process and mail everyone's saliva sample back to the lab for analysis.
Over the course of the next 1-2 months, we will build trust and community, while developing our family trees. After about 6-8 weeks, when we receive our ethnicity results, we will use the results to learn about our Ethnic heritage. Using the interactive website and maps, students will develop projects identifying the geography and history of their possible descendants.
By bringing their own ethnic history alive, my hope is that students will see the importance of these ethnic identities and how they have impacted modern settlement in the United States and across the world.
