Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. I currently use chairs and stability balls; the variety of seating allows students to move and adjust for their physical and mental comfort each day. Students also vary in height, and one-size-fits-all desks mean the tallest and least tall students are often sitting awkwardly all day. The opportunity to stand and stretch will also stretch their thinking. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. Adding the balls 3 years ago led to more engagement and excitement during class. When students are given the ability to choose, they know they have more control over their learning and are inherently more excited.
The standing desks will give them more learning choices and control. The charging stations I will build will allow us to continue using phones as a supplement in the class, as well as providing them the option to choose to surrender them during class to enhance their own learning. Even adults struggle to put down their phones to focus. I want to teach my students to use technology as a tool, but also the discipline to control that tool.
I have seen choice repeatedly and positively affect my students' work and demeanor. I am excited to see what these new options bring out in the areas of collaboration, discussion, and focus!
