My fourteen students with a learning disability are included in two general education classrooms. They come from African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian decent. The majority of the students are eligible for free lunch and their ability to demonstrate knowledge of content is two or more grade-level equivalents below the fourth grade. They are timid, but willing young children that need an advocate that will implant skills and strategies that they can use to demonstrate how to clearly write to express, explain, and defend what they have read. They need to apply math concepts and operations to problem solve using accurate reasoning and proof appropriately. Despite their learning deficits, they yearn to bridge the gap between their academic strengths and weaknesses so that they can develop skills to help them function and succeed in the learning environment. I facilitate their learning through specialized instruction in small group and, at times, one-to-one.
