The majority of students enrolled at YWLA come from economically disadvantaged families, and therefore have had very little exposure to or understanding of the career opportunities available within my content area (graphic design) as very few of them have access to technology or an understanding of the aesthetics of digital media. Thus, the introduction to the content requires an additional challenge of engaging the students in the pursuit of an end that is essentially foreign to them. Not only is it “foreign” to economically disadvantaged students, but the field of graphic design is not one traditionally occupied by women. My mission is to establish a supportive, student-centered environment in my classroom that builds the confidence of my students as they venture into unknown digital territory and shatters preconceived gender stereotypes about the field to propel them to success in college and beyond.
